Kitchen Functionality Tips – Combining Design and Function

The kitchen is the heart of the home. Being the most utilised room in the house you want your kitchen to be functional and tasteful. Whether you’re cooking, entertaining, cleaning or eating, a well designed kitchen will help you transform the area into a space you love. If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, these tips will help you curate a functional space that suits your needs. Kitchen Layout Options

A well planned kitchen layout is crucial to gaining a functional and enjoyable space. Kitchens can come in a range of different layouts and designs. The shape and size of your kitchen will determine which layout will maximise space efficiency and best suit your preferences. One wall kitchens, L-shaped kitchens, U-shaped kitchens and island benches, amongst others are some of the options available to you.

One Wall Kitchens –

One wall kitchens are best suited to compact spaces, such as small, open plan apartments. A larger-scale one wall kitchen is also an option for families who like to dine in the kitchen. This layout works well with the dining table placed adjacent to the kitchen.

L-Shaped Kitchens –

L-shaped kitchens tend to lend themselves to medium and large areas, and are also ideal if you’re wanting to incorporate a dining area into the kitchen. L-shaped kitchens are adaptable, stylish and sociable. Our Retreat Design tip for L-shaped kitchens is to utilise cabinetry above the bench top to maximise the space available.

U-Shaped Kitchens –

U-shaped kitchens are flexible and are perfect for large families that want to work simultaneously within the space. U-shaped kitchens work in long galley-style kitchens as well as square kitchens in which you could incorporate an island bench workspace.

Island Bench Kitchens –

Finally, island bench designs are ideal for people who want their kitchens to be a social hub. Island bench kitchens also allow for ample cooking space and storage options. The ability to design built in sinks into the island bench is another benefit of this option.

The Design Process

These are some great kitchen design layouts if you’re looking to renovate your kitchen, however this list is not exhaustive and there are many other options available to you to suit your kitchen needs. Reach out to us if you would like to find out more!

Ample Walking Space

No matter what kitchen layout you decide on, having enough walking space is of the utmost importance. Having a good amount of walking space allows for the kitchen to feel spacious and comfortable. The recommended key metric for walking space around the kitchen bench top is at least 36 inches wide (91 cm, 914mm).

Maximising Storage

Storage is critical when it comes to designing a kitchen. Having efficient storage options allows for the organisation of goods, utensils and appliances. Not only this, but it also allows you to clear up space on the bench tops which provides a clean look. Utilising cabinetry above bench tops, draw spaces and storage within island benches is a great way to utilise the area. Integrated appliances

Integrated appliances are becoming an increasingly popular option for contemporary kitchens, offering ultimate design freedom. Integrated appliances can help disparate the zone of the kitchen and make the space feel more cohesive. Providing a modern design and aesthetic look, integrated appliances are a key element in creating a functional kitchen.

Overall, there are many elements to consider when designing a functional kitchen. Choosing the right layout, having ample walking space, maximising storage options and integrating your appliances are just some of our solutions.
