Milan Furniture Fair 2014 – Bathroom Trends

Bathrooms at the Salone Internazionale del Bagno 2014 (Milan Design Week) were also warm and organic this year with wood finishes, tonal colours and bold bath and tap ware making appearances. Key designs from this year’s exhibitors were:

  • Organic and Timber Finishes: Featuring lots of warm and inviting colours this year, the bathrooms relied heavily on the use of timber and wood to soften the feel of the bathroom interior. Vanities in solid timber, veneer cabinetry and wall cladding in muted timber tones were popular. Natural and organic surfaces such as stone and marble were also on trend and luxurious looking.

  • The ‘Wellness’ area:  An eclectic mix of styles were paired together creating bathroom spaces that were no longer just purely functional but took on more of a ‘spa’ or ‘wellness’ feel. Decoration and furnishings within the bathroom space were popular and helped to create more serene and relaxing interiors.

  • Matt Finishes:  Matt white surface finishes for vanities and tap ware was a dominant trend with bathtubs also popping up in a range of new colours such as black, grey and pale blue. Tactile and textured surfaces were also a key trend.

  • Copper, Marble and Metal:  Mixing well with the muted timber tones, splashes of brilliant copper and powder coated metal cabinets were a hit. Large veined marble and stone bench tops also helped tie this look together.

  • Free standing baths & basins: Sculptural floor mounted taps next to free standing baths were again very popular. As were tall freestanding basins with feature mirrors. Designs evoking opulence through the use of luxurious shapes and finishes were on display.
