Embarking on a kitchen or bathroom renovation is a big commitment which takes careful planning and organisation. With multiple stages and tradespeople involved it can be hard to know what to expect. Below we have compiled a list of the typical stages involved in a kitchen or bathroom project.
Retreat Design are the experts in providing a seamless renovation and will manage the project from start to finish. For information on the initial design phase, please also have a read of this page which outlines the Design Process.
First Fix – Allow a couple of days for each trade. The plumbing and electrical contractors will come and set up the new positions of the pipes and wires.
Tiling – Allow approximately 1 week. The tiler will prepare the new screed, complete waterproofing and lay your new tiles.
Shower Screen – As soon as the tiling is complete, we will template the shower screen which can take 1-2 weeks to manufacture and install.
Cornices and Ceiling – Allow 1-2 days. A gyprocker will fill any holes from the old fittings or apply a new ceiling if required. The new cornice goes over the tiles if they are full height.
Cabinetry Install – Cabinetry and mirrors will be installed by our team of in-house cabinet makers. A template of the stone bench top will be taken and then we generally allow 2 weeks for manufacture and install of this. You can save time by ordering a vanity with top included.
Fit Off – Plumbing and electrical fit off all the lights, power points, taps, showers and basin wastes to make your bathroom functional.
Finishing Touches – Accessories including towel rails, toilet roll holders and hooks etc will then be installed.
Allow 4-6 weeks for your standard bathroom installation. Some bespoke or special items may take longer. Lead times for manufacture of cabinetry can be between 8-14 weeks depending on the finish.
First Fix – Allow a couple of days for each trade. The plumbing and electrical contractors will come and set up the new positions of the pipes and wires.
Cabinetry Install – Allow 2-3 days. This will be completed by our team of in-house cabinet makers (we do not sub contract). These are the most exciting days when your new kitchen really starts to take shape!
Stone / Bench Top Template – We then template your bench top as soon as possible to prevent any delays with the manufacture of the stone. Allow 2 weeks for manufacture.
Bulkheads – Allow 1-3 days. If the cabinets do not go up to the ceiling, we often drop a bulkhead over the top of the cabinets to finish them off depending on the design of the space.
Stone / Bench Top Install – When ready, the stones benches will be installed.
Splashback Template – After the installation of the benchtops, we take a template for the splashback. Depending on the material (e.g. glass or stone), this can be another 1-2 weeks to manufacture. If the splashback is being tiled, this can now commence which would typically take a few days to complete.
Fit Off – Plumbing and electrical fit off for all of the lights, power points, taps, sinks and appliances so your kitchen is in perfect working order.
Finishing Touches – Accessories will be installed and final cabinetry alignments completed before handover.
Flooring – Please note if you are tiling the area, this is installed prior to the kitchen going in. For timber flooring it should be laid or patched before the cabinetry. We then recommend sanding and polishing the timber floors is done after the kitchen is installed.
Allow 4-6 weeks for your standard kitchen installation. Some bespoke or special items may take longer. Lead times for manufacture of cabinetry can be between 8-14 weeks depending on the finish.
