Tips on how to renovate a small kitchen

Homes with smaller than desired kitchens come with a range of natural restrictions you will have to deal with. Nonetheless, smaller kitchens can be renovated if you’re creative enough. If you want to craft a kitchen that suits your needs, you can, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to get the job done.

1. Knock Down a Wall
The most obvious solution when you have a tiny kitchen is to knock down the walls. Before you do this, speak with a qualified professional. You don’t want to hit a load bearing wall and find the whole house crumbling in on itself.

At Retreat Design we have builders and engineers on hand to provide you with expert advice on what you can and can not do with your existing house structure.

2. Get Better with Kitchen Cupboards
Conventional kitchen cupboards are deep and quite inaccessible. Thankfully, at Retreat Design, we have access to cutting edge cabinetry hardware technology. This means hard to reach cavities can be made accessible by rotating drawers and heavy duty hinges can ensure doors don’t hinder access to drawers.

3. Considered Appliances
You don’t have much space, so you need to make do with what you have. A good way to do this is through making smart purchases with your appliances.

For example, do you really need a dishwasher if you’re only cooking for your significant other every evening? Don’t feel like you have to have a full-sized oven and a dishwasher if you aren’t cooking for a whole family.

4. Colour Considerations
Bold colours in a small kitchen aren’t a good idea. It will only add an unnecessary layer of complexity to the aesthetic appeal. Go for white which will create a sense of space by adding reflection from the light.

Try high gloss white lacquer pared with a reconstituted white stone for a highly minimal, uncluttered and spacious finish.

5. Avoid Detail
Avoid unnecessary detail on your surfaces. All it will do is amplify how much clutter you have hanging around. Try not to use too many ornaments. Taps, light fittings, and cabinets should be clean and simple. Sometimes less is more.

It Doesn’t Have to Cost Much
When you renovate a small kitchen using the above tips it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. At Retreat Design we have a wide range of cabinetry solutions to suit any kitchen budget. We can work with you to source accessory products such as splash backs and tap ware from a wide range of suppliers, or even a supplier you have sourced from your own research.
