Metal finishes in the kitchen
Stainless Steel is having a moment in kitchen design. We first saw this trending as a surface material at Eurocucina in 2024 with suppliers continuing to embrace the functionality of metal in the kitchen. Whether for decorative highlights or chef-style bench tops, metal finishes such as stainless steel & brushed nickel having been proving popular ever since. Here at Retreat Design, we have several products available to achieve the look:
STAINLESS STEEL - Popular in the 70’s and 80’s and a long favoured choice of the professional chef, stainless steel is utterly functional and stylish. Providing a hygienic surface for food preparation and cooking, stainless steel ensures durability and resistance to corrosion. We are loving the use of stainless steel as a bench top and splash back material as well as highlights in the cabinetry and island benches.
FENIX NTA - Fenix® NTA Nanotech Alloy for Interior Design. An innovative surface material made in Italy. This metal surface comes with all the characteristics FENIX NTM has to offer including resistance to scratches, anti-fingerprint, soft to touch, and the thermal healing of micro-scratches. We have designed several kitchens with the use of Fenix NTA as a metallic highlight on both cabinetry and bench tops.
OXIDISED LAQUER - Arrital Cucine offers a stunning product which is essentially a painted finish door which undergoes a 5 step process to achieve an oxidised lacquered effect. The metallic colours available include gold, bronze, steel, lead and cast iron. We have used this oxidised lacquer finish on several kitchen projects giving a unique, industrial style aesthetic. The production process consists of five main steps. The painting process begins with the application of a carefully sanded polyester base coat. A base layer is then applied to create the reflective effect of the finish and bring the piece to the desired colour. The surface is then manually “scratched” and coated with a varnish containing metallic powders, creating the Oxidised effect. A matt acrylic varnish is then applied, providing scratch resistance and ensuring long-lasting durability. This finish also has anti-yellowing properties, preserving its appearance over time.
OXIDISED LAQUER - Similar to Arrital, Arredo3 also offers an oxidised lacquer finish for their cabinetry in a variety of colours: Champagne, Platinum, Oxidised, Burnished and Bronze. These durable lacquered finishes offer a striking metallic look with excellent durability properties.
LIQUID METAL COATING - Locally, we have the option of using a high tech coated finish which can be applied to cabinetry that is manufactured in Perth. Morph Liquid Metals are applicators of a range of sprayable ‘real’ liquid metal coatings. Their exceptional product transforms almost any substrate to take the appearance of solid metal. This product gives us the design freedom to specify metallic finishes almost anywhere in the interior.
